- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Combine buttermilk, apple sauce, brown sugar, vanilla, and egg in a medium bowl, stirring well.
- Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flours, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Cut in chilled butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Fold in diced apples.
- Add buttermilk mixture just until combined.
- Turn dough onto floured surface and knead lightly four times.
- Shape into a 9-inch circle and cut into 12 wedges.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden.
- Cool on a rack for 10 minutes.
- Mix powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and milk to make glaze. Drizzle over cooled scones.
