Ingredients

For the Filling
  • 4 medium apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 cups mixed berries fresh or frozen
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted
For the Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup butter cold, cut into cubes

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, mixed berries, granulated sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly. Stir in the melted butter.
    4 medium apples
  3. Pour the fruit mixture into a 9 or 10-inch cast-iron skillet, spreading it evenly.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt for the crumble topping.
    4 medium apples
  5. Add the cold butter cubes to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry blender, fork, or your fingertips to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
    4 medium apples
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit mixture in the skillet.
  7. Place the skillet on a baking sheet (to catch any drips) and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbly.
  8. Let the skillet cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to thicken.
